Comrades In Space / Black Man In A Red Suit
This psychedelic collage covers the wonderings of communists in space featuring the first person of color in space (Phạm Tuân) and the first Afro-Cuban in space (Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez).
“Black Man In A Red Suit” is a web-series that explores the representation of Black people in Soviet culture and propaganda.
While introducing a viewer to the particular Soviet artifacts (movies, cartoons, posters, etc…), this project seeks not to advocate for Soviet totalitarianism, but to show the potential of socialism to go beyond identity politics, and offer a platform of the universal solidarity.
Made by Anatoli Ulyanov and Natasha Masharova who were both born in the Soviet Union and are currently based in the US as asylees and filmmakers of VVHY Visual Lab (vvhy.tv).
