The no budget stop motion short IMACHINARIUM depicts a living scenography built with scrap from electronic devices. The electronic parts interact and communicate with each other thus setting the machine in motion. The film explores questions about technology and artificial intelligence in an abstract manner.
We are proud to present our first stop-motion project after 7 months of hard play. The assignment was to conceptualize, create and animate a universe with its own set of laws. We started by gathering old computer parts in October. We had quite a hard time finding these but thanks to the Faculty of Literature at Leuven University and some colleague students we did manage to amass enough crap. Afterwards we set out on dismantling and reassembling the circuit boards, transistors, cables, etc. into new objects. Slowly we constructed a scenography by rearranging the objects and at the end of December our first test shots were made. We had to be very intuitive in using the limited resources and equipment. For example we used magnets of old hard disks to hold up our center piece and for dolly’s we had to glue wooden shelves to the floor to make tracks. Especially the bird-view shot was quite a challenge to pull off which we did with a tripod normally used for lights. We decided to work with 25 frames per second and on average we needed 2 minutes in between each picture to animate our scene (depending on the shot). We used 3 black lights to lighten up our fluorescent scenery. The film was shot from January till March and we have been editing and finishing it up until now, May the 11th.
